Memorial Day–Remembering Those Who Gave Their Lives in Service

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, as it was a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. It began following the American Civil War, and the first official celebration was May 30, 1868.

The current use of the name Memorial Day did not come into use until after World War II.
The National Holiday Act of 1971 dictated that the holiday be observed on the last Monday of May. It is this day that we honor all those who have died in military service.
